Introduction
History of the Polish Chapter of SPIE was never systematically
described. Its beginnings can be found in three brochures
entitled "Informacja, Sekcja Polska SPIE SEP" and dated grudzień
(December) 1988, czerwiec (June) 1989, and grudzień (December)
1989. In 1990, the title of that publication was changed into
"Biuletyn Polskiej Sekcji SPIE". Its No. 4, dated styczeń-grudzień
(January-December) 1990 was as large as 116 pages and contained
some essential documents of historic value. All those four issues
were published under Dr Ryszard Romaniuk's editorship with
Bolesław Grejcz and Maria Gościcka's help. They are no longer
available.
The above-mentioned "Biuletyn Polskiej Sekcji SPIE" No. 4 was
followed by No. 5 dated czerwiec (June) 1991. This and all next
issues of that publication were edited by the author of this
text, and starting from the sixth issue (No. 6, Dec '91) its Polish
title has been changed into English: "SPIE Polish Chapter
Bulletin" (SPIE-PL Bulletin) and all its texts were published
only in English (before both the Polish and English languages
were used). In 1992 and 1995, the Bulletin became, respectively,
a quartely and bimonthly publication. Each issue included a
permanent column: "SPIE-PL Chapter's Chronicle" which can be
qualified, on a limited scale, as the SPIE-PL's history in
segments. Moreover, the 1998 issues were devoted to the 10th
Anniversary of the Polish Chapter of SPIE. My editorials and a
number of other texts therein have a historic value.
The English version of the SPIE-PL Bulletin is still accessible,
but its predecessors are not longer available. It will therefore
be useful to give here a brief SPIE-PL's history based on some
original documents and personal texts being stored in the
Chapter's office and this author's memory. For details,
please see the next pages as specified in the menus.
